Biography

General Committee Member

Dr Divya-Jyoti Sharma

Dr Divya-Jyoti Sharma is a specialist anaesthetist & director of clinical training at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. I was born in New Delhi, brought up in Sydney and moved to Perth after marriage in 1999. I have twins studying in university. I have training in mindful communication, conflict resolution, stress management and advanced leadership training with Women’s Leadership Australia.

I seek to be elected as a general committee member.

I have been an active ISWA Life Member Representative on ISWA Council since its inception in 2020.

  • I have attended every meeting of Council members during my tenure.

  • I helped to ensure that a formal risk assessment for the ICC was undertaken in 2020.

  • I have been part of the NAARI organising team since 2017, responsible for inaugural medical booth offering free health checks from volunteer medicos of different ages and stages in Perth. I helped organise Dynamic NAARI 2018, a true networking event with a skills seminar and career expo for young minds to see what WA Indian diaspora can achieve.

  • In NAARI 2021 I was responsible for sourcing volunteers for NAARI and for the first time reached out to high school students of Indian origin to participate and receive acknowledgement as part of their WACE requirements.

  • I was part of the 2021 Diwali Mela organising committee. I coordinated the Diwali booklet and Rangoli competition, for which there was transparent voting, both in-person and online using a QR code.

  • Most recently, I have been part of the innovative online BreaktheBias program organising committee for ISWA Women’s Wing. I collaborated with our regional Indian diaspora to bring the segment on bush tucker. I was responsible for the editing & presenting the Tribute to Lata Mangeshkar by our local singers.

  • I have served as Secretary of the ISWA Constitutional Reform Committee from 2020-22. I am committed to transparent constitutional reform.

  • I helped to arrange the Child Health Seminar in conjunction with AIMA WA to be a hybrid event. I have been instrumental in advocating for technology to enhance community participation.

I wrote to our state MLAs to call out the bias in the Premier’s language when speaking about India in April 2021. In May 2021, when the federal government restricted Australians from returning from India, I wrote to all federal parliamentarians and spoke out on ABC radio, local and national about this as a concerned citizen who knows that my voice matters. Those interviews came about through my interactions on Twitter.

I am articulate, tech-savvy and passionate about transparency, good governance and engagement. ISWA will maintain its peak body status through active engagement with all levels of government to achieve widespread benefits for our Indian diaspora in Perth. This includes, but not limited to:

  • Obtaining grants to make ICC viable, debt free and help with the administrative workload.

  • Establishing senior Day Care for all 5 days

  • Start working for aged care as a long term plan

  • Lobby for direct flights from Perth to India
